Student activist Taha Bouhafs filmed a woman and a man being beaten during the demonstrations on 1 May by a man wearing a police visor.
The man has been identified by Le Monde newspaper as senior French presidential aide Alexandre Benalla.
He is being questioned by police and has been dismissed from his job.

Some of the world's biggest celebrities have lost millions of Twitter followers after the company cracked down on "locked" accounts. US singer Katy Perry, the most-followed user on Twitter, and Lady Gaga lost about 2.5 million followers. Barack Obama went down 2.1 million. Twitter said it had taken the decision due to its "ongoing and global effort to build trust". It follows renewed scrutiny over fake news and users on social media. The new measures mean that any user whose account is locked for unusual activity - such as being blocked or sending unusual volumes of Tweets - and who did not respond to a prompt to verify their identity would be excluded from Twitter follower counts. The head of the company's legal team, Vijaya Gadde, said that most accounts would only lose around four followers as a result of the new measures. Ryanair cancels 600 flights over cabin crew strike

Irish airline Ryanair has cancelled up to 600 flights over two days next week due to a strike by cabin crew in Belgium, Portugal and Spain. It will affect almost 50,000 passengers who had booked to fly to or from those three countries on Wednesday 25 July and Thursday 26 July. Ryanair apologised for the disruption. It has already contacted the affected passengers and said if customers have not received an email or SMS text, they should expect to travel as scheduled. The European cabin crew strike follows on from separate industrial action by Ryanair's Irish-based pilots. On Wednesday,  the airline confirmed it had to cancel 24 flights between Ireland and the UK scheduled for Friday 20 July  due to the pilots' strike. Trump says ready to meet Iran's Rouhani

Donald Trump has offered to meet Iran's leaders with "no preconditions" and "any time they want". "I'd meet with anybody. I believe in meetings," the US president told reporters at the White House. Mr Trump's conciliatory approach comes after he and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani traded hostile warnings earlier this month. In May, the US left a deal which curbed Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of international sanctions. Washington is preparing to re-impose sanctions on Tehran within days - despite objections from the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany, which also signed the 2015 agreement. The US is deeply suspicious of Iranian activity in the Middle East and is an ally of Israel and Saudi Arabia, two of Iran's foes. "If they want to meet, we'll meet," Mr Trump said.
