Student activist Taha Bouhafs filmed a woman and a man being beaten during the demonstrations on 1 May by a man wearing a police visor.
The man has been identified by Le Monde newspaper as senior French presidential aide Alexandre Benalla.
He is being questioned by police and has been dismissed from his job.

Brexit: Tell EU the Chequers plan is final offer, says Leadsom

Brussels must be told that the prime minister's blueprint for future UK-EU relations is "the final offer", Commons leader Andrea Leadsom has said. Mrs Leadsom  told The House magazine  the Chequers plan must be taken seriously or the EU risked a "no deal" Brexit. Boris Johnson and David Davis quit the cabinet over the prime minister's plan. Theresa May has denied claims the trade proposals were "dead in the water" after accepting Brexiteers' changes to the Customs Bill this week. Fake Twitter users: Celebrities lose followers amid crackdown

Some of the world's biggest celebrities have lost millions of Twitter followers after the company cracked down on "locked" accounts. US singer Katy Perry, the most-followed user on Twitter, and Lady Gaga lost about 2.5 million followers. Barack Obama went down 2.1 million. Twitter said it had taken the decision due to its "ongoing and global effort to build trust". It follows renewed scrutiny over fake news and users on social media. The new measures mean that any user whose account is locked for unusual activity - such as being blocked or sending unusual volumes of Tweets - and who did not respond to a prompt to verify their identity would be excluded from Twitter follower counts. The head of the company's legal team, Vijaya Gadde, said that most accounts would only lose around four followers as a result of the new measures.
